Travel nurse housing on Long Island: a practical guide
Long Island has some of the busiest hospitals in New York, and it draws travel nurses and clinicians all year. Finding a place to live for a 13-week contract can be harder than finding the job itself: most rentals here want a 12-month lease, and hotels add up fast. This guide covers what to look for, where the major hospitals are, and how to plan your commute.
Major hospitals in Nassau County
- NYU Langone Hospital, Long Island in Mineola
- North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset
- Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park
- Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow
- Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre
- Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside
- St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center in Roslyn
- Northwell Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream
Major hospitals in Suffolk County
- Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook
- Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip
- South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore
- Huntington Hospital in Huntington
- St. Catherine of Siena Hospital in Smithtown
Central Nassau, around Hempstead, Uniondale and Garden City, is a practical base because several of the Nassau hospitals are a short drive in different directions. Our furnished homes near Hofstra, for example, are within about 5 miles of Mercy, Nassau University Medical Center and NYU Langone Hospital, Long Island.
Why furnished mid-term housing fits a travel contract
- Terms that match your contract. Stays of 30 nights or more, so a 13-week assignment or an extension does not lock you into a year.
- Nothing to buy or set up. Furniture, linens, kitchen basics, Wi-Fi and utilities are already in place, so you can start work the day after you arrive.
- One predictable monthly cost. A flat monthly rate is easier to plan around your housing stipend than nightly hotel rates.
- Real rest between shifts. A quiet bedroom, a full kitchen and laundry make night shifts and long stretches easier than a hotel room.
What to check before you book
- Drive time to your hospital at the hours your shifts start and end, not just the distance.
- Parking: whether it is free, off-street, and close to the door after a late shift.
- Blackout curtains or a quiet bedroom if you work nights.
- A washer and dryer on site, for scrubs.
- Whether utilities and Wi-Fi are included in the monthly price.
- What happens if your contract is extended or cancelled early.
- Whether your staffing agency can book and pay for the stay directly.
Getting around
Most clinicians on Long Island drive. The Long Island Expressway (I-495), the Northern State Parkway and the Southern State Parkway run east to west across the island, and rush-hour traffic on all three can double a trip, so plan around your shift times. The Long Island Rail Road has stations in most Nassau towns, and NICE buses connect to the Hempstead Transit Center, which helps on days you would rather not drive.
A note on stipends and taxes
Housing stipends and their tax treatment depend on your agency, your contract and whether you keep a permanent tax home. Ask your recruiter how your stipend is paid, and talk to a tax professional who works with travel clinicians. This guide is general information, not tax advice.
